How I’m Advocating for My Son’s Health

Having dedicated much of my career as a nurse in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), I never imagined that as a new mother, I would find myself facing the threat of bankruptcy just to secure the essential care my child needs.

From a young age, I always dreamed of having children. After struggling with infertility, I chose to adopt. The moment I laid eyes on Jake’s file, I knew he was meant to be my son. His infectious smile, despite having a cleft lip and palate, captured my heart immediately.

I first met Jake in October 2017 when he was just two years old, and he brought joy into our home from day one. His curiosity about the world was boundless; whether he was playing with Legos or racing cars, it was clear he was a happy child. However, he also faced numerous medical challenges that no child should have to endure.

Shortly after joining our family, Jake required surgery to repair his cleft palate. If left untreated, this condition could have led to significant complications affecting his ability to swallow, chew, and breathe. He was also at risk for hearing loss and speech difficulties. In essence, this surgery was crucial for him to live a healthy life.

My family and I believed that the necessity of this surgery would be evident to anyone. However, when we submitted his hospital bills to our insurance provider, we were met with a denial. The insurance companies seemed blind to Jake’s humanity, leaving us with a staggering bill of $23,000—an amount that is simply unmanageable for most families, especially when many Americans struggle to have even $500 available for emergencies.

Despite multiple communications with the insurance company, I have yet to receive a clear answer regarding the coverage for Jake’s surgery. Additionally, part of his initial medical evaluations required a visit to the dentist. After spending two years in an orphanage without proper dental care, he had cavities and decay.

During a visit to the dentist, Jake was given sedatives, but they didn’t help calm him. After several unsuccessful attempts to treat him, the dentist recommended that we find a doctor who could provide sedation for the necessary dental work. I returned to the insurance company to explain the situation, only to be denied once again.

In moments of frustration, I found myself asking, “Why is it so difficult to provide my son with the care he deserves? Why isn’t my insurance covering these essential procedures I’ve been paying for my entire adult life?” After relentless advocacy, the insurance company finally approved the dental procedure. It should not be this challenging to secure adequate healthcare for your child. I shouldn’t have to step away from caring for Jake to negotiate with insurance companies.

As a NICU nurse, I witness firsthand the struggles that parents face due to the myriad medical issues their premature babies endure. It’s already a battle for these infants to survive; their parents should not have to contend with insurance coverage concerns. Unfortunately, the problem extends beyond insurance providers; it is also rooted in the policies of our lawmakers, who have yet to create a healthcare system that protects everyone.

In recent weeks, there have been alarming threats to Americans’ access to quality, affordable healthcare. The Department of Justice’s lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act (ACA) jeopardizes the coverage for 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Additionally, the administration has finalized rules for “junk insurance,” which do not offer the essential protections outlined in the ACA.

Furthermore, political groups are eager to fill vacant Supreme Court seats with justices who may not prioritize the health care needs of millions of working families, including mine. In Florida alone, over 2.3 million children rely on Medicaid.

Ultimately, this issue boils down to ensuring that children have access to the healthcare they need. I hope my lawmakers will choose to stand with families like mine. Summary

In my fight for my son Jake’s health, I have navigated the complexities of insurance denial and the challenges of securing necessary medical care. As a NICU nurse and a mother, I advocate for a healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of children and families. The experiences I’ve faced reflect a larger systemic issue that requires urgent attention from lawmakers to ensure every child has access to essential healthcare services.
