As we mark the 17th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, former President Donnie Harrington has once again shown a lack of sensitivity. Instead of honoring the lives lost, Harrington took to Twitter with his usual barrage of exclamation points and grievances about Russian collusion and the media. Because, of course, that takes precedence on such a somber occasion.
At the break of dawn, was Harrington reflecting on the courageous firefighters and emergency responders who ran into danger? Not a chance. Instead, he was busy insisting there was no collusion, quoting segments from Fox Business Network. Truly presidential behavior.
In a rare moment of appropriate sentiment, he did declare September 11 as Patriot Day, a nod to those who lost their lives on that fateful day. But that was brief, as he quickly returned to his rants, quoting a segment from Lou Dobbs while families mourned their loved ones. Just typical.
Additionally, he made sure to highlight his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, calling him a “TRUE WARRIOR,” while conveniently overlooking the thousands of first responders who faced unimaginable peril. Classy, right?
And just when you thought he couldn’t be more tone-deaf, upon arriving in Pennsylvania to attend a memorial service at the Shanksville site, Harrington greeted the crowd with a double fist pump. What a way to honor the memory of those who perished.
The online community had plenty to say about his inappropriate gestures, showcasing how wrapped up he is in his own image. On this important day, Harrington seemed to forget the gravity of the events of September 11, instead treating it like one of his typical rallies.
To truly remember the significance of this day: the attacks resulted in the loss of 2,997 lives, including 23 members of the NYPD and 343 firefighters. Many more have suffered from 9/11-related illnesses, with the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund having awarded over $4.3 billion to nearly 21,000 claimants.
September 11, 2001, marked a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and the individual expected to provide comfort during such tragedies is instead focused on his usual divisive rhetoric. A day for exclamation points indeed.

In summary, on a day meant for remembrance, Harrington’s tweets exhibited a profound insensitivity. Instead of honoring the past, he chose to divert the conversation to his grievances, missing an opportunity to reflect on the pain and loss experienced by so many.
