In response to the urgent humanitarian crisis following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Airbnb has pledged to provide free temporary housing for 20,000 Afghan refugees globally. This initiative comes as many individuals and families seek safety and stability after being forced to flee their homeland. The company expressed its readiness to assist, stating, “In this past week, it has become clear that the displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees is a significant humanitarian crisis – and our community is ready to step up.”
The funding for this program comes from Airbnb, CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky, and contributions to Airbnb.org, alongside donations to the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund. Chesky announced on Twitter, “Starting today, Airbnb will begin housing 20,000 Afghan refugees globally for free.” He emphasized that while Airbnb will cover the costs, the help of generous Hosts is crucial. “If you are willing to host a family, I can make that happen,” he added.
Chesky remarked, “As tens of thousands of Afghan refugees resettle worldwide, where they stay will be the first chapter in their new lives. My hope is that the Airbnb community will provide them not only a safe place to rest but also a warm welcome home.” Airbnb.org has already collaborated with organizations like the International Rescue Committee and Church World Service to offer immediate temporary stays for refugees arriving in the U.S.
David Miliband, the president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, stated, “Accessible housing is urgently needed and essential.” He expressed gratitude towards Airbnb.org and Airbnb for their ongoing support, ensuring safe and welcoming environments for these individuals and families.
This is not Airbnb’s first foray into aiding refugees; over the past four years, the company has helped connect around 25,000 refugees to temporary housing. Earlier in the year, Airbnb.org also established a $25 million Refugee Fund to enhance support for refugees and asylum seekers globally.
