Are you a new mom navigating the world of breastfeeding? If so, meeting with a lactation consultant is a must—like, yesterday! Research from clinical trials at the Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine shows that regular sessions with a lactation consultant can significantly boost breastfeeding rates, especially for those who might be hesitant to start. The findings, published in the American Journal of Public Health, highlight that women who received support were four times more likely to exclusively breastfeed at one month and nearly three times more likely to continue at three months.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing for at least a year as solids are introduced. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that fewer than 75% of infants are breastfed at all, and less than half are breastfeeding at six months.
Dr. Sarah Thompson, a family and social medicine expert, pointed out that the interventions in their studies had a greater impact than previous trials aimed at improving breastfeeding rates. The trials specifically included younger, overweight, less-educated, and Black/non-Hispanic women, who often face unique challenges such as difficulty with latching and milk production. Yet, with the right support from a lactation consultant, these women showed a marked improvement in breastfeeding duration, allowing them to access the health benefits associated with nursing.
In one notable trial called the BINGO study, 666 low-income women were randomly assigned to different groups to assess the effectiveness of lactation consultant support. Those who received guidance from lactation consultants were contacted regularly to track their breastfeeding status. The results were promising, indicating that ongoing support really does make a difference.
