In a significant move, Dick’s Sporting Goods has announced the cessation of assault-style weapon sales across its stores, along with a new policy to prohibit gun sales to individuals under the age of 21. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which claimed 17 lives and has sparked a nationwide call for stricter gun control.
The company’s Chairman and CEO, Mark Thompson, shared the news during an appearance on Good Morning America, emphasizing the need for action following the Parkland tragedy. “We believe it was necessary to take a stand,” Thompson stated. He highlighted that while they support the Second Amendment and he himself is a gun owner, the company does not want to be part of the problem associated with these firearms.
Through a statement on Twitter, Dick’s expressed their condolences to the victims and their families while stressing that thoughts and prayers alone are insufficient. “We have tremendous respect for the students advocating for change regarding gun violence,” the statement read. “The current systems are not effective in protecting our children and communities.”
In addition to stopping the sale of assault-style rifles, Dick’s will also discontinue the sale of high-capacity magazines and reaffirmed their policy against selling bump stocks. They are advocating for “common sense gun reform” at the national level.
Interestingly, the company had already taken steps to limit the sale of assault-style rifles following the Sandy Hook shooting. The new policies will extend to their subsidiary, Field & Stream, as well. Thompson noted that the shooter from the Parkland incident had purchased a firearm at Dick’s, although it was not the weapon used in the attack. He stated that all laws were adhered to during that sale but expressed concerns that existing regulations do not adequately prevent dangerous individuals from obtaining firearms.
Despite the likelihood of backlash, many applaud Dick’s courageous decision. “If the students in Parkland can stand up for what they believe in, we can do the same alongside them,” Thompson said.
